Professor Orlando Patterson has been honored with the Gold Musgrave Medal from the Institute of Jamaica. Professor Patterson teaches at Harvard University and received the recognition for his achievements as a scholar. He was trained as a sociologist at the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Mona and then went on to the London School of Economics where he obtained a doctorate in sociology. Completing his graduate studies, he returned to take a position as lecturer at UWI, becoming one of the Caribbean scholars who worked to de-colonize the curriculum in the Caribbean educational system and to pioneer a genuine scholarship of the region. Professor Patterson was born and raised in Jamaica, and he is respected around the world for his work and achievements.
