Winston Rodney was born in St. Anne’s Bay back in 1948. As Burning Spear…a name he took from Kenya Independane leader Jomo Kenyatta…he began recording in 1969. Marcus Garvey, the repatriation of Africa, and the oppression of the Black race were, and are, the subjects that Burning Spear sings about. Uncompromising Roots music and a Reggae sound that was anything but mainstream helped to establish Burning Spear as one of Jamaica’s all-time greatest international success stories. Many of his albums rank right up there with those of Bob Marley and the Wailers as real Reggae classics.
