Conversations with Event Planner & Marketing Specialist, Nordene Bartley

Event Planner, Marketing Specialist and Community Servant Nordene Bartley was currently resides in South Florida, but her heart and home are in Ocho Rios. Nordene is now the owner and head planner for Deney’s Planning, a full service event planning company that plans milestone celebrations, romantic experiences and special occasions. She is also a freelancer, specializing in marketing campaigns, brand awareness, social media strategy and consumer research. Nordene obtained her bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, with a concentration in marketing and education at Florida A&M University (FAMU). She started her professional career in marketing at Digicel Group. Here Nordene worked with a team to plan and execute marketing campaigns in the Diaspora to generate emotional capital with consumers and increase brand awareness, through media, press, sponsorship events and social media. Her niche for planning, entertaining and design was quickly recognized in her corporate setting. She soon began planning and organized the company’s holiday parties, staff activities and community engagement projects. These experiences, along with her educational background gave Nordene her rich mix of planning, marketing and communication experience. Here is our conversation with Nordene Bartley.

Q: Are you a business person or entrepreneur or both? 
A: Business Person

Q: What was your profession before you started your business?
A: Marketing Executive for Caribbean telecommunication company

Q: Who or what motivated you to go into business?
A: I’ve always been the go-to person amongst my family and friends to plan and organize events and activities, which motivated me to pursue my passion as my profession.

Q: Tell us about your business?
A: Deney’s Planning is an event design and planning company. We offer full planning, partial planning and event coordinating services that are customizable to fit each client’s needs.

Q: Many businesses have a moment they call their “big break”, whether it be a news story, a big contract etc. Have you or your business had that “”big break ” yet?
A: Not yet, but I am working on making this happen

Q: Currently what is our biggest business challenge?
A: Gaining exposure

Q: Other than the money what types of satisfaction do you get out of your work?
A: I absolutely enjoy seeing my work unfold into the lifelong memories for my clients.

Q: What motivates you on a day to day basis?
A: I am most motivated by my family. I am an only child but I have a large extended family. My younger cousins look up to me so I always do my best so I can be a living example for them that hard work and dedication pays off. I’m also involved with many service projects. The children I work with need to see and hear from someone with their background that hard work and determination brings success.

Q: How do you motivate people that aren’t close to you and enable them to see your vision?
A: Staying positive and sharing my story.

Q: What time do you wake up and do you have a routine?
A: I wake up at 7 am, spend time with God, make a smoothie, stretch then start my day.

Q: Do you have any hobbies?
A: Cooking, reading and traveling

Q: If the economy crashed hard and there was no more room for you in the business sector, what would you do with yourself?
A: I would continue freelance marketing and begin teaching middle school

Q: Seven day, six night, all expense paid, my vacation destination is…
A: South Africa!!!

Q: My favorite guilty pleasure is…
A: Eating homemade chocolate chip cookies while Binge-watching Netflix

Q: My favorite Jamaican food is…
