Nanny Town in Portland was not developed on the most accessible piece of property. It is located on Nanny Town Hill at some 2,000 feet above sea level. This is the most famous of the Maroon settlements in Jamaica, and at one time, there were more than 140 houses here. The town was named for the Maroon leader responsible for many of the people’s victories during the first Maroon War. Constructed around 1723, the British did not discover it until 1728. Nanny Town was attacked by the English several times between 1730 and 1734.
