Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) Wins General Election

The Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) has unseated the People’s National Party (PNP) and won the 2016 General Election. The JLP leader Andrew Holness was greeted by an enthusiastic crowd of supporters when he arrived at party headquarters. Holness defeated Patrick Roberts of the PNP and retained his seat as representing St. Andrew West Central. Joining Holness in Jamaica’s Parliament will be his wife Juliet who won her election contest against Imani Duncan-Price for the St. Andrew East Rural seat. Acknowledging the PNP defeat, the party’s deputy general secretary Julian Robinson noted that a number of government seats were lost, but that the overall situation remains close, as the PNP waits for the final vote tally. The PNP is expected to concede the election at its party headquarters shortly.
