On August 19, 1987, Patrick Chung, the Jamaican-born American National Football League (NFL) football player, was born in Kingston, Jamaica.
Chung has played with the New England Patriots as a strong safety since 2014. Chung was drafted by New England in the second round of the NFL Draft in 2009. He previously played college football at Oregon and professionally for the Philadelphia Eagles. Chung, who has four brothers and three sisters, lived with his family in Jamaica prior to moving to California where he attended Rancho Cucamonga High School. He played safety and wide receiver positions and was an ALL-League choice twice. At college, he was credited with helping place the Oregon Ducks team into the category of elite college teams. Patrick Chung has the distinction of having started in more games for Oregon than any player in the college’s history. He started in 51 consecutive games while playing for Oregon.
He decided not to take his final year of eligibility in 2008 in order to enter the NFL Draft that year. He then reversed his decision and returned to Oregon to play in the 2009 Senior Bowl He then attended the NFL Scouting Combine, finishing most of the drills before experiencing an injury to his knee. However, he then attended Oregon’s pro day and was able to participate in several drills. After finishing the pre-draft process, he was expected to be a second-round pick by NFL draft experts. He was chosen by the New England Patriots in the second round in 2009.
Chung attained great success during his professional career. After a stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, he returned to play for the Patriots and turned in exceptional performances throughout his time with the team. In March 2018, the Patriots provided recognition of Chung’s value to the team by signing him to a two-year contract extension worth $7.80 million, with $5.12 million guaranteed, and a signing bonus of $3.60 million. He was also named team captain for the first time in that year. In August of 2019, Chung signed a one-year contract extension with the team, which keeps him playing for the Patriots through the season of 2021.
Patrick Chung is not the only member of his family to achieve remarkable success. His parents had successful careers in the music industry before moving to the United States. His mother is Sophia George-Chung, a singer who was best known for her hit song “Girle Girle.” His father Ronald Chung discovered her talent when she came to audition for him on the advice of a friend. The two ultimately married, and he. served as her manager during her singing career. “Girle Girle” became the Number 1 song in Jamaica, and she went on to perform around the world as she gained recognition beginning in 1985. She enjoyed considerable fame, but she ultimately decided to leave the music business, and the family moved to the United States for the sake of the children in 1996.
