On Friday, 23 May 2025, the long-running American quiz show Jeopardy! featured a clue that brought global attention to a popular article published on Jamaicans.com. The clue appeared in a music-themed category and read:
“I’m ok/I’m drinking rum and Red Bull is one of Jamaicans.com’s 12 songs in this style to get Jamaicans on the dance floor.”
The clue was valued at $400, and the correct response, according to the show, was “Reggae.” However, many Jamaicans watching felt the answer should have been “Dancehall.”
Both songs mentioned—“I’m Okay” and “Rum & Red Bull”—are popular dancehall tracks by iconic Jamaican entertainer Beenie Man. In fact, “Rum & Red Bull”, featuring Future Fambo, is widely regarded as one of the ultimate dancehall party anthems. While some fans took issue with “Reggae” being accepted as the correct answer, others noted that dancehall is often seen as a subgenre of reggae. That makes the response technically accurate, even if it feels overly broad to diehard fans of Jamaican music.
The clue was based on a feature published on Jamaicans.com titled “12 Reggae Songs That Will Get Jamaicans On The Dance Floor.” The article was intended as a fun guide to the most danceable Jamaican tracks, spanning everything from classic reggae to modern dancehall hits.
Beenie Man, also known as “The Doctor” and “King of the Dancehall,” has been a dominant force in Jamaican music for decades. His work bridges multiple eras of reggae and dancehall, making him one of the most versatile performers in the genre’s history.
Jamaicans.com founder Xavier Murphy shared his reaction to the moment:
“It was a real surprise. Jeopardy is one of my favourite shows—I watch it every week. To see Jamaicans.com referenced on it was an incredible honour,” Murphy said. “It just shows how far the site has come in almost 30 years of highlighting Jamaican culture.”
